In rubber and plastic applications, iron oxide red—free from heavy metal ions such as copper and manganese—can be used in aviation tires to prevent rubber aging. Iron oxide pigments are known for their strong tinting strength and pure color. They serve as colorants and fillers in PVC plastic flooring, PVC color films, as well as in thermosetting and thermoplastic plastics including calcium plastic, bakelite powder, and polyolefins.

Because iron oxide pigments are non-toxic, transparent iron oxide is used internationally in coloring plastic beer bottles, medical vials, and food packaging plastics. It represents a new type of blended plastic pigment.
