Iron oxide pigments are widely used in coatings, paints, and inks due to their non-toxicity, non-bleeding properties, low cost, and wide range of hues. Types of iron oxide pigments used in coatings include yellow, red, brown, and black iron oxides, as well as micaceous iron oxide, transparent yellow, transparent red, and translucent varieties. Among these, iron red is the most significant, being produced in the largest quantities and offering the broadest applicability.

Iron red exhibits excellent heat resistance, retaining its color up to 500°C and maintaining its chemical structure even at 1200°C, demonstrating remarkable stability. It also absorbs ultraviolet radiation from sunlight, thereby providing protective benefits to coatings. Its resistance to dilute acids, alkalis, water, and solvents further contributes to its outstanding weather resistance.
